Imagine a new art and garden space spanning the river between Barnes and Chiswick. Our plan is to transform the abandoned Victorian railway bridge that crosses the Thames in south-west London between Barnes and Chiswick, into an inspiring, public green and contemporary art space.
The original Barnes Bridge was a Grade II listed Victorian railway bridge. Built in 1846, it was closed in 1895, when the original cast iron bridge was upgraded to a more robust wrought iron structure. It’s been disused for over 125 years.
Contemplate a new view of the river
Now we’re seizing a unique chance to see this historic structure restored. Reimagine it as a green walkway for everyone to enjoy.
The View will be a tranquil, relaxing green space with inspiring, panoramic views of the Thames. Picture yourself sitting among seasonal, varied plants and contemporary art, gazing over the water.

A bridge not too far – accessible for all
Each and every visitor will be able to enjoy this stunning green space from either side of the river. We’re planning step-free access from Dukes Meadows, Chiswick in Hounslow and Barnes in Richmond.
